Biography of David Tennant
Early Life
- David Tennant was born 18 April, 1971.
- His parents are Alexander McDonald and Helen McDonald.
- He grew up with his brother Blair and sister Karan in Ralston.
- He wanted to be an actor because he was a fan of the original Doctor Who series but his parents wanted him to aim for conventional work.
- He watched every Doctor Who episode for years and meet Tom Baker (the fourth Doctor) at a book signing event.
- He was educated at Paisley Grammar School.
- Tenants acting at the age of 11 was noticed by Edith MacArthur and he said he would be a successful actor one day.
Early Work
- When he was 16 he acted in an anti-smoking film produced by the Glasgow Health Bored and aired it on television.
- A year later he played a role in an episode of Dramarama.
- He also made an appearance in a Scottish television sitcom called Rab C Nesbitt.
- David’s first major television role was as the manic Campbell in the Scottish TV drama Takin’ Over the Asylum.
- He played many other roles on TV in different shows including a role as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet.
- He had 6 roles on television between the years 2004 and 2005 including a role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Barty Crouch Jr.
Role in Doctor Who
- In 2005, BBC America started a new series of Doctor Who since the first one ended in 1996.
- In 2005, Christopher Eccleston played The Doctor but left after the first season and was replaced by David Tennant.
- David, being the 10th incarnation of The Doctor, made his first appearance in the final episode of season 1, The Parting of Ways, after the 9th Doctor regenerated, but it was a very brief scene only being about 30 seconds.
- He also made an appearance in a seven minute mini episode for Children in Need.
- In late July of 2005 he began filming in his first full length Doctor Who episode, called The Christmas Invasion, which aired on December 25, 2005.
- Tennant had much enthusiasm for fulfilling his childhood dream.
- In 2006 readers of the Doctor Who magazine voted Tennant as Best Doctor.
- In 2007 he was voted coolest character on UK television.
- Also in 2007 David Tennant was in another seven minute special Doctor Who episode along with Peter Davison (the fifth Doctor) for children in need.
- Davison’s daughter also was in a Doctor Who episode in 2008 called The Doctor’s Daughter.
- David also made an appearance in an episode of The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures, Sarah Jane (played by Elisabeth Sladen) being a companion of the 4th Doctor in the classical series.
- On October 29, 2008, David announced he would be stepping down from playing the role of The Doctor.
- In 2010, in an episode called The End of Time Part 2, The Doctor regenerated and David left the show with his successor being Matt Smith.
- David had four other famous actors to star as companions of the Doctor in his time. The actors who played these companions were Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), Freema Agyeman(Martha Jones), John Barrowman (Captain Jack), and Catherine Tate (Donna Noble).
- David appeared in a total of 44 full episodes of Doctor Who which is three seasons as well as a 5 episodes leading up to The Doctors regeneration and him leaving the show.
- On March 30th, 2013, BBC announced that David Tennant along with Billie Piper [Rose Tyler, companion of the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and the first companion of the 10th Doctor] would be returning in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary appearing alongside with the current Doctor (Matt Smith), Jenna-Louise Coleman (Clara Oswin Oswald, last companion of the 11th Doctor and first of the 12th) and John Hurt (the Doctors secret incarnation.
Personal Life
- On the 30th of December, 2011, David married actress, Georgia Moffett, who played Jenny in The Doctors Daughter on Doctor Who and is also the real life daughter of Peter Davison (the fifth Doctor).
- They had two children named Olive and Wilfred as well as adopting Georgia’s 9 year old son named Ty.
- In 2008 David had surgery for a prolapsed disc.
